Sleep of the Yogis

Far away in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see the beauty, believe in them and try to follow where they lead. – Louisa May Alcott

Many of us have trouble sleeping. Our screens, our worries and our bodies can keep us up at night.

There’s a different kind of sleep that will leave you refreshed and rejuvenated in body mind and spirit. It’s YOGA NIDRA.

“Yoga nidra allows us to reach the most profound level of relaxation possible,” says Rod Stryker, the founder of Para-Yoga, who has been teaching yoga nidra since the mid-1990s and who writes about it in his book, The Four Desires. “It opens a doorway to a place where we can see ourselves and our lives in the most positive light.”

Yoga Nidra changes your brain waves by bringing you into theta. It helps reduce anxiety and stress and break addictions and bad habits

It’s an amazing practice that systematically maps the body along with other techniques that bring us into a deep relaxed state where we can make a new resolution or san kalpa.

“In yoga nidra, we restore our body, senses, and mind to their natural function and awaken a seventh sense that allows us to feel no separation, that only sees wholeness, tranquility, and well-being,” says Richard Miller, a yoga teacher and clinical psychologist who is at the forefront of the movement to teach yoga nidra and to bring it to a wider audience.

The military is now offering iRest yoga nidra practice to wounded warriors at Walter Reed; Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas; Camp Lejeune, a large Marine Corps base in North Carolina; and VA facilities in Miami, Chicago, and Washington, DC.

Sweet Dreams!
