Why Prayer Beads?

The origin of the word “prayer” is “wreath” or bead. Many religions use prayer beads.

Mala beads In Tibet and India the Sanskrit word mala means’garden’, ‘garden of flowers’, ‘necklace of beads‘.and rosary beads are prayer tools. They keep the mind from wandering. mind from wandering, to make a habit of prayer, and to do something with your hands.

The mala has 108 beads. The catholic rosary has 54 so if you do it twice it’s 108, prayers as well. The number 108 has long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga. According to yogic tradition, there are 108 pithas, or sacred sites, throughout India. And there are also 108 Upanishads and 108 marmapoints, or sacred places of the body.

Science & medicine concur.  According to Dr Dharma Singh Khalsa,  author of Meditation As Medicine: Activate the Power of Your Natural Healing Force,  “A map of the brain shows that the nerve endings on your fingertips correspond to more areas of the brain than any other body area, except perhaps the tongue and lips.”

Reflexology also confirms in their traditions the fingertips connect to the brain.

It’s in Your Hands
